Casa Astillero: Frisbee by the Beach

How to combine Ultimate Frisbee training with a team building trip in Casa Astillero?

The best way, I suppose, is to take the cones off the field and bring the discs to the beach. Shed off the knee-high socks and cleats and trade ’em for a barefoot run in the sand! That’s exactly what my team for the summer at Casa Astillero in Calatagan, Batagas.

Leaving the Grassy Fields

From the Southwest Integrated Provincial Terminal (right by Coastal Mall) we took a bus to Calatagan and at the last stop, bought food. Since there are grills in the area, we mainly got hotdogs, liempo and chicken and marinated them upon arrival. The tricycle to the Casa Astillero costs P50 a person. We rented two tents. The arbour screen tents (10-14 pax) above costs P1,200 while the smaller one below (5-8 pax) is for P800. We also rented a table for P800.

Setting up Camp at Casa Astillero

We wasted no time applying sunblock and heading to the beach right after. Tell you honestly, the shore wasn’t that wide considering that half of the dry areas will be covered with water by sundown. There were even rocks and corrals from the sea. BUT there is this perfect elevated spot that has flat and soft sand and big enough to set up a field

In preparation for the Summer League, we did drills and had 4-on-4 pickup games for hours. The view from the sunset and the slow approach of the water caps a picture-perfect day.

Dinner Underneath the Stars

By nighttime we started grilling our food and soon enjoyed a feast! We also setup bonfire by the beach. The view of the starry sky was absolutely breathtaking. I don’t think I have seen that much stars in the city. The shore was quiet and the waves almost lulled us to sleep.

We left early the next day. At first I thought sleep would evade me since I am not used to sleeping anywhere but on beds, but I had a pretty good night’s sleep in the tents. This trip was my first ever experience to play Ultimate on the beach. That spot right by Casa Astillero certainly did not disappoint.

Happy I got to know USO better, since I have only known one or two people before this trip. Certainly helped to get a grasp of how they play on the field (and off it). Here’s to bringing people together to play Ultimate everywhere in the Philippines!

We were supposed to go here on Holy Week but I wasn’t able to book early for the tents. We move our outing schedule by end of April instead. 🙂

You’re right, they are pretty strict when it comes to reservations. Even the volleyball net has to be reserved and can’t be used walk-in. 🙂

Nice beach. But I am not fond of camping though. Is there a hotel or resort nearby where we can stay overnight indoors?

Looks like you really had fun with your team. Camping out on a tent is already an adventure. Haha! I’ve done that only once, I think. Love your sunset photo by the way. 🙂

True. Plus you don’t need nets — just a disc and maybe some cones 🙂

I remember when we played frisbee in the beach those were good times., But its actually harder to play on the sands.

I agree, esp if the sand is rocky or too soft. It takes extra energy. Thankfully, the sands on our spot are perfect — also in size. It wasn’t inclined either 🙂
